Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Your plan will make a lot more sense when you realize the bulk of the focus is on preventive care rather than fixing damage that has already been done. While dental insurance does help pay for crowns and other restorative treatments, generally speaking checkup and other services that identify and stop dental issues early on get the most reimbursement. This is meant to help you be proactive about your oral health. After all, if you can stop cavities and gum disease from happening, then you don’t need to pay to treat them!

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Not all dental plans are the same, and it’s important to confirm what sort of coverage you have before seeking treatment. A typical plan will look something like this:

  • 100% coverage for checkups, cleanings, X-rays, and other types of preventive care.
  • 80% coverage for fillings and other minor procedures.
  • 50% coverage for any lengthier or more invasive treatments. This might include crown placement or root canal therapy.
  • No coverage for cosmetic dentistry and other elective forms of treatment.
